City College Norwich RUG room

The RUG Room is a ‘haven’ and ‘social workspace’ for young people with Aspergers and Autistic Spectrum Disorder (ASD) at City College Norwich.

Following completion, very quickly this became the UK’s first ‘exemplar’ project for a learning environment of this type. A key feature of this project was the speed with which it was implemented by our design team and appointed contractor. We were appointed in June and completed a process of consultation with students, design, tender of construction packages, project management and site supervision to completion and handover for opening in September. We brought in an expert lighting associate as the sensory elements of this project were a high priority.

The involvement of the students throughout the design process was crucial to the scheme’s success and we can see a number of successful concepts in this design which translate well into other sectors.
